Increased enrollment may be linked to high tuition at CU schools

By Erin Williams
ewilli47@mscd.edu

Enrollment for transfer students from the University of Colorado-Boulder and UCD is on the rise.

With a 29 percent increase from CU-Boulder and 26 percent increase from UCD, Metro's Office of Admissions said it is beginning to wonder if the increase in student tuition at both schools is sending students to campuses with cheaper tuition.  more  >>>

What is happening to the women of Juarez, Mexico?

By Liz Carrasco
carrascl@mscd.edu

On Sept. 27, another woman was found dead in Juarez, Mexico, half-naked, close to a police station. And no one had any answers.

It would seem like another unanswered question, another murder, but, multiply her death by 400 women since 1993 and still no answers? more  >>>

Students help area heal

By Becky Christian
christre@mscd.edu

Almost two years after a fire burned 4,000 acres outside Jamestown in October 2003, people are still re-building their lives.

Metro English professor Sandra Doe, with the help of Metro adjunct professor Lee Christopher, co-founded the Mountain Land Restoration Project after Doe's sister house was almost destroyed in the fire. For two years they have brought a group of students from her Nature Writing class, alumni and community members up the mountain to help restore the land. Last year's group planted seeds that burst from the mountainside where the group came to plant trees this year. more  >>>

Women must have right to self

It's a scary time for folks like us. John Roberts, a man whose stance on female reproductive freedom is anything but certain, was sworn in as our new Supreme Court Chief Justice last Thursday. By the time this column is printed, we will be facing the inevitable confirmation of yet another conservative judge. more  >>>

Justice for All, stay out of my uterus

War on gas could save us

Does anyone believe we're getting ripped off with gas prices going through the roof? I don't drive, but it doesn't take a NASCAR driver to figure it out.

Does anyone know the real reason gas prices are at all-time highs? I'm sure the leaders of this country do, how else would they explain the recent expansion of their personal wealth? more  >>>

THEIR OPINION

By Hal Nees

The Faculty Senate at Metro represents the faculty of the college in all matters of interest and concern to the faculty.

These interests and concerns include, but are not limited to, receiving and making recommendations on current and proposed changes in academic, administrative, fiscal and personnel policies. The Faculty Senate is part of the governance at the college. The college operates using a system where the board of trustees and the president of the college involve the faculty in the decision-making process. The faculty offers suggestions and recommendations, influencing the institution on many levels. In most cases, the faculty has much of the say in terms of the curriculum offered at the college. more  >>>

Why leaping on grenades beats thumb-twiddling any day

By Alan "Saboteur Charlie X-Ray" Franklin

George Eliot wrote that "any coward can fight a battle when he's sure of winning, but give me the man who has pluck to fight when he's sure of losing."

That's why I enjoyed reading the recent response of five (that's all five, right?) SGA senators to some thoughts I offered on last year's failed elections. more  >>>

Kayaking program preps Auraria students for fun on the water

Sitting in the red boat, I purposefully flip underwater, as instructed, to practice a roll. Below water, a feeling of panic immediately forces me to eject. I escape. Relief is short- lived as frustration overwhelms it.

When your boat flips you must react. This is no test. There are no second chances. You can't go back and change your answer. This is real. You must react quickly and correctly in order to survive. more  >>>
