YOUR OPINION

I have read the article in the Oct. 6 issue of The Metropolitan about campus parking with great interest. I can live with the fact that Parking is AHEC's sole fiefdom. I can live with the fact that as an adjunct, a large part of my salary goes back into the AHEC coffers. However, I am very curious about the service my money pays for.

I am disabled and use the handicapped portion of Lot H.

1. There are never enough spots. However, the spots reserved for those with handicapped passes are usually quite empty.

2. When I can't find a handicapped spot and park in the garage-which has a handful of six handicapped spots-I am denied entry to the Rest room. I walk slowly, and like many my age, getting to a restroom can be important.

3. When I get in early enough to find a handicapped spot, the meter is frequently inoperative. Last week, the meter took my $5 and choked. I called for service and was asked to walk to the end of the parking lot and use another machine-for $1.25 more (and oh yes-ignore the $5 I already spent). After a prolonged argument I convinced the person on the phone to send someone to fix the machine. I stood there watching the repairman try multiple times before agreeing that, yup, the machine is broken. This situation repeats itself on a regular basis.

I am sure my story is not unique. If the AHEC folks are going to overcharge us as they continue to do, how about some service? How about machines that work when the weather turns bad? How about attendants with change available? Hmmm, Service?
