SGA endorses referendums

The Metro Student Government Assembly has officially supported a "yes" vote on Referendums C and D.

"As the duly elected representatives of the (Metro) student body, (we) have no higher calling than to ensure the welfare of its constituency," the SGA said in a news release.

Citing rising tuition costs and possible cuts to the Colorado higher education budget if voters turn down the measures, the SGA said they feel their passing would be best for all public college students.

"We honestly believe that C and D are in the best interests of the students of Auraria," said SGA Speaker of the Senate Jesse Samora.

There was debate over whether the SGA could actually take a position on C and D, but after consulting with Metro General Counsel Lee Combs, it discovered that the SGA could endorse the measures as long as it does not use state money, student fees or state property to actively campaign.

"It is clear that a failure of referenda C and D to pass will result in a new and different (Metro) than the one that students currently enjoy," the SGA said in the news release. "The likelihood is that students will pay more for their education, while receiving less value than they have in the past."
