Professor wins grant to study sewage systems

Biology professor Rebecca Ferrell has been awarded a $10,120 research grant from the Lindbergh Foundation to study the impact of resort sewage systems in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on the ocean and its ecosystem.

Together with Todd Bergren, director of the biotechnology program at Community College of Aurora, Ferrell received the grant for the project, "Protecting the Earth's Oceans by Improving Vacation Resort Sewage Systems with a Quick Start Nitrification System in the Existing Wetlands of Quintana Roo."

Ferrell says the grant will enable her students to gain hands-on research experience while helping to address the environmental problems in the area.

The grant, one of eight awarded by the Lindbergh Foundation so far this year, was chosen from 169 applicants around the world. - @Metro

Flu shots available for those at high-risk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that until Oct. 24, only those individuals in high-risk groups receive flu shots.

Those groups are: persons 65 years or older, those who live or work in a medical facility, persons between 2 and 24 years old with higher-risk medical conditions, pregnant women in second and third trimesters, household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months old, and persons who care for individuals with higher-risk medical conditions.

Higher-risk medical conditions include heart, lung and kidney disease, persons who are immuno-compromised and those with metabolic and blood disorders.

The Health Center at Auraria will be providing flu shots to students, faculty and staff who meet the high-risk criteria from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Oct. 20, in the Plaza Building corridor near the Center.

The cost is $20, cash or check only. - @Metro

Campaign seeks donations from Metro faculty, staff

Metro has always generously supported the Colorado Combined Campaign, an organization that provides Colorado state employees with a convenient method of making donations to one or more of 600 charities.

This year's CCC campaign is being run by the Classified Staff Council, whose members hope for record participation by the Metro community. Council President Vonda Knox is asking faculty and staff to give careful consideration to making a donation this year.

"Even a $1 donation from each one of us makes a difference," Knox said. - @Metro
