Metro forward Shaun Elbaum battles for control of the ball with CU-Colorado Springs' Marcus Reynolds on Friday, Oct. 21 during a 3-0 win at Auraria Field.
"We were very fortunate to get those goals," head coach Ken Parsons said. "We had some opportunities to get some more, but we'll take the shutout."
The loss brings the 'Runners to a 12-5-1 record on the season. The team entered the weekend in the No. 3 spot for the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional rankings, but the loss may force a change this week.
"It was two defensive errors that cost us those goals," Parsons said. "This far into the season, the team that makes the least amount of mistakes usually wins."
There had been three teams tied for the No. 4 spot.
Missing from the lineup on Sunday was Metro's star midfielder, Preston Borrego. He went down with an injury following a rough tackle during Friday's match. It was the third game Borrego has missed this season. Without him, Metro has won only one of the three games.
This is the final week of the regular season. The Roadrunners faced Regis University on Wednesday, Oct. 26. In their previous meeting, Metro beat Regis 5-2.
The final game of the season will be in Durango, where the 'Runners will square off with the No. 3 team in the nation, Fort Lewis College.
The Skyhawks are nearly perfect on the year with a 14-0-1 record.
Fort Lewis will host the 2005 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer championships Nov. 4 and 6.
