The Metro women's soccer team treated fans to a 2-0 shutout in their home opener against the University of Mary Sept. 1 at Auraria Field. The Roadrunners won their second straight game to start the season 2-1.
"Things are looking great so far," goalkeeper Becca Maloney said. "I'm pleased with the way the team is playing together. We're looking better than we did last year."
After 27 minutes of play in the first half of the game, forward Jen Thomas was tackled inside the goalkeeper box, giving Metro a shot to take the early lead. Midfielder Vanessa Mais took the penalty kick and scored the first goal of the day.
A few minutes into the second half, forward Becca Mays scored her first goal of the season, assisted by midfielder Gabby Klipp, giving the Roadrunners the 2-0 decision.
"She came off a little bit of an injury from the last game, but she came out and stepped it up a bit from this last week," head coach Adrienne Almaraz said on Mays' performance. "I think with her she's going be getting into the groove again. She's a dangerous player, and she can finish, and that's what we need her to do this season."
Mays finished the game with four shots on goal and scored her first goal on the season.
"I think I did OK," Mays said on her performance. "I need to finish more of the opportunities. Instead of just getting one (goal) every four games, I need to get one a game."
Maloney played the whole 90 minutes, saved six shots, and received her first shutout of the season.
"She went in last game and did well," Almaraz said on Maloney's performance. "She's been working hard in training, and she deserves it. She needs to continue to work hard. The girls are confident in her that she's going to do a good job. It was a good win, a good shutout for her."
The Roadrunners outshot University of Mary, 15-12 and had more shots on goal, 11-6.
Before defeating Mary, Metro took a trip to Minnesota, where they played against No. 8 Minnesota State-Mankato and No. 19 Winona State, Aug. 28 and 30.
Metro took the lead against Minnesota State-Mankato 1-0 before halftime with a goal by forward Ashley Nemmers, assisted by forward Jen Thomas, who scored for Metro in the second half, leading 2-0. The Mavericks quickly fired back with two cornerkick goals to tie the game in the second half. MSU-Mankato put the game away in overtime when goalkeeper, Lisa Jewett was found alone in the box, when MSU forward Natalie Bullis fired a shot passed her.
"We had a couple of crucial break downs that shouldn't have happened," Maloney said on the Mankato game. "Overall I think it was a learning experience, and we'll come away from it better."
The Roadrunners found themselves in overtime once again against Winona State. Thomas scored first once more, however three minutes later, the Warriors struck back with a goal of their own. Nemmers scored her second goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners the 2-1 victory.
The victory at home against the University of Mary finished their first weekend 2-1. They will host Washburn University Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. at Auraria Field.
