With a compressed general election season and Nov. 4 approaching fast, student groups on campus are mobilizing to get out the vote for their preferred presidential candidate.
Students for Barack Obama is aiming to register new voters for the election.
At a Sept. 4 meeting, students were encouraged to support the campaign by donating their time to help with a variety of tasks, including registering voters and manning information tables on campus.
"Registering voters can be done any time. Donating 30 minutes to a few hours a week makes a difference," said Anna Salzillo, a volunteer for Students for Barack Obama.
Depending on how much time students have to donate, they are matched up with an appropriate task.
Volunteers are broken up into teams to complete different tasks.
"We are continually trying to bring new people into the fold, and digital networking is an easy way to do this," Chris Rork, president of Students for Barack Obama at Metro, said.
"If everyone just sent out e-mails or contacted people through MySpace, it would grow exponentially."
Digital networking requires contacting people through e-mail, Facebook, MySpace and other networks about upcoming Obama events and information, a technique the national campaign has used since the primary season.
Students can find out about upcoming campaign events by creating an account at barackobama.com and joining the Auraria Campus group.
The group's next meeting will be on at 4 p.m. Sept. 11, in the Tivoli Turnhalle.
The Auraria campus chapter of Students for McCain is still in the planning stages but will be holding a meeting next week, the date and time to be decided, Sarah Burrows, chairwoman of the group, said.
Burrows is also working to arrange a bi-partisan talk with other campus groups during one of the upcoming McCain - Obama debates.
Kailei Higginson is chair of Auraria College Republicans and a member of Students for McCain.
"A lot of the stuff we're going to do is not targeted so much on campus," Higginson said.
Planned events include knocking on doors and informing people of Sen. McCain's stance on important issues as well as holding voter registration drives.
Students interested in getting involved with the Auraria chapter of Students for McCain can contact Burrows at sarah.burrows@ucdenver.edu.
