Seven days of sports, speakers, parties and food will make Metro's 2008 homecoming a week to remember.
A variety of events, including lectures, sports events, theater productions and parties are making this year's homecoming, which runs from Sept. 22 - 28, better than ever, said director of Alumni Programs and Communications Stefanie Carroll.
"We really wanted alumni and families to have lots of events to pick from," Carroll said. "We're hoping that this will be the biggest homecoming in college history."
"It's going to be a very fun week," said Elaine Becks, vice chair of the homecoming committee.
The committee's goal, Becks said, is to reach as many students as possible.
Alumni will be honored at the annual Alumni Recognition Evening at 6 p.m. Sept. 24, at St. Cajetan's Center.
This year, the Alumni Association will be giving out scholarships to Metro students for the first time, Carroll said.
Students have the opportunity to win a $500 prize by participating in five-person team bed races at 3 p.m. Sept. 26, in the old bus turnaround outside of the Tivoli Center, said Brooke Dilling, director of the Office of Student Activities.
Four members of the team will push a mattress on wheels down the racecourse while the fifth member sits on top.
At a halfway point, the fifth member will get off the mattress, change into pajamas and jump back on the mattress to finish the race.
Contestants with creative costumes will be awarded consolation points, Dilling said.
To prepare for the more traditional sports events, a pep rally that will take place at 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 23, at the Tivoli Commons.
Games and contests will take place as a lead-up to the rally, Becks said, including a soccer goal and basketball hoop where students can shoot for prizes.
A pre-game party at 5 p.m. Sept. 26, in the Tivoli Commons will lead up the women's volleyball game against Nebraska-Kearney, put on by the Metro State Student Government Assembly.
It will essentially be an alcohol-free tailgate party, Becks said.
The Metro men's soccer team will face Midwestern State at 11 p.m. Sept. 28.
Midwestern is the rival that beat Metro twice last season and is now third in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. Metro is currently ranked seventh.
"This is one of those games that has a little more meaning," said Ken Parsons, men's head soccer coach.
The Metro women's soccer team will also be playing at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, against Carson-Newman College, a team they have not played before.
"They'll be dangerous, they'll be organized in the attack," head coach Adrianne Almaraz said. "I think overall, it'll be a close game."
Other events include a dodgeball tournament sponsored by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a high tea hosted by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Student Services.
