Less than four minutes from fulltime,
Mines midfielder John Moseley
found forward Cameron Brown in
front of the net and Brown found the
back of the net to break up Vickery's
shutout and tie the game 1-1.
"This was a perfect opportunity
for us to put our heads down and give
up," Parsons said, "but this team has
the same championship character as
last year."
Johnson stepped up to take control
with the game in the balance. The
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
Player of the Week found Hambrick
to make the assist and beat the fulltime
whistle.
"Our coach is always stressing
that we need to finish; we need to
make sure that we get a result," Johnson
said. "We showed good composure
and finished it out strong."
Metro ended the scoring to get
the 2-1 win, but they also drew first
blood. Midfielder Stephen Emory
made the first strike in conference
play, converting on a penalty kick in
the 37th minute for his third goal of
the season.
Emory, a starting freshman in
2007, has emerged as one of many
offensive options for the Roadrunners'
wide-open attack this season.
Senior forwards Ola Sandquist
and Johnson lead the team with eight
points apiece to help replace Phillip
Owen, last year's top scoring threat.
"We have roles for our players,"
Parsons said. "Kellen (Johnson) and
Ola (Sandquist) are responsible for
getting us goals."
Just behind the forward duo,
Sunday's goalscorers Emory and
Hambrick have added seven and six
points; respectively.
The Friday before, Metro had displayed
offensive prowess in the last
non-conference game against Seattle
Pacific College.
As in the Mines game, the score
was tied 1-1 early after an opening
score by Hambrick and a response
from SPU forward Andy Wolverton.
Twenty minutes in, Emory converted
another one of his penalty
kicks to go up 2-1, giving the sophomore
almost as many points this year
as he had all of last year. Metro never
looked back, adding goals from the
forward duo of Sandquist and Johnson
to cruise to a 4-1 finish.
"You have to go out there and be
confident when taking penalty kicks,"
Emory said. "It's nerve-racking, but I
like the pressure."
With the RMAC season underway,
the 'Runners head next to Colorado
Springs to take on the conference
lightweight Mountain Lions before a
Sunday date with rival Regis.
"You can't put all your energy
into Regis on Sunday," Parsons said.
"Because if you don't get the result
on Friday, those are the games that
keep you out of the tournament."
