After a few weeks of struggling to finish shots, the No. 16 Metro women's soccer team finally started setting the ball on frame when they won against No. 22 Carson-Newman Sept. 28 at Auraria Field.
In the beginning of the season, the Roadrunners fought through tough matches, shooting a great deal of shots without being able to score. Now, between the game against Regis Sept. 21 and
Carson-Newman Sept. 28, Metro's offense is on fire. It takes hard work for a team to be able to adjust from not finishing to scoring in only a matter of days.
"We work hard in practice and when we need to get things done, we do it," midfielder Madison McQuilliams said.
Forward Becca Mays began the scoring with a goal off a corner kick in the first five minutes of play for the second week in a row. Midfielder Vanessa Mais scored shortly after off a penalty kick, giving Metro a quick 2-0 lead.
"Her PKs are solid," head coach Adrianne Almaraz said. "It's good to have that type of leadership on the field. That's something we need especially in the center of the part."
Mays continued the scoring 10 minutes later, with an assist from McQuilliams.
"She's coming into the game working hard and getting assists," Almaraz said. "She's getting goals also, she's doing what we need her to do."
The Roadrunners scored one more goal off a corner kick, leaving Metro with the 4-0 victory. Almaraz feels it's worthy to win early in the season to keep the energy going throughout the whole year.
"It's very important because you gain momentum throughout the season, especially against tough teams as Carson-Newman and Regis last week," Almaraz said. "If we play well against them, we just continue to gain momentum and it helps down the road to build our confidence also."
Not only did the offense dominate on the field, the defense was unbeatable as well, as the Lady Eagles could only produce five shots on goal against the Roadrunners. Goalkeeper Becca Maloney saved all their shots and recorded her sixth shutout of the season. Even though the Roadrunners are creating goals now, it doesn't mean they can step down and stop working hard.
"Every game is going to be a battle this year," Mais said. "In the RMAC, we know that everyone is out to get us, so we just prepare like every other week."
Metro will stay at home next weekend and host Adams State and New Mexico Highlands Oct. 3 and 5 at Auraria Field. The Roadrunners are now 3-0-1, 7-1-2 overall.
"It's like a test," Almaraz said. "If you study for the test, you'll do fine. If we practice hard during the week, the game will take care of itself."
