Metro hockey's bid to win its first game of the season hit a speed bump on Thursday with a 19-3 loss against Utah State University and a 5-4 loss in a shootout on Saturday against University of Northern Colorado. Metro gained their first season point in Saturday's loss as they sent it to overtime and lost in a shoot out. Goals by Dan Golden, Connor Leah and Kyle Obuhanick were the only bright spots during Thursday's rout. "That was the worst ass beating I've ever had in my whole life. I rather not talk about it," said Head Coach Curtis Duffus. Duffus asked his Assistant Coach Ryan Callahan, "Is USU really that good?" Callahan responded, "No, we're just that bad." Team Captain Turner Bahn was more open in his analysis, "We played better than the score. We had a couple of defensive lapses, and our goaltending is not up to speed." Saturday's game was more evenly matched on the scoreboard. Metro led 2-1 after the first period with goals from Dan Golden and Zach Malish. UNC tied up the game in the second and took the lead late in third. Four defensemen from Metro pushed the puck towards UNC. The goalie Andrew Carlson was pulled, and Dan Golden scored with less then 10 seconds left in the third to send the game to overtime and eventually a shootout. Metro's lone shootout goal came from Ryan Yudez as Metro fell 2-1 on points. Defensemen Chris Koppel and A.J. Sandell went down with knee and foot injuries. Koppel said, "I should be fine, it only hurts when I put weight on it." After the game, doctors said Koppel would be out for three to four weeks with an MCL strain. Sandell practiced on Monday and confirmed, "the foot is fine." Metro will play in Utah against Utah University on Thursday, Brigham Young on Friday, and will have a chance to avenge their loss against Utah State University on Saturday.
