Metro Hockey grabbed their first win of the season against Utah University 11-5 during a three game road trip in Utah. But they fell to Brigham Young University 8-6 and Utah State University 16-4.
There were some bright spots during the trip, though. In addition to their first win, forward Dan Golden got a hat trick and an assist against Utah University on Thursday. Forward Troy Oakes added assists and Forward Steve Call had two goals. Forward Loundagin Montana had three points off a goal in two assists. In total, 11 Metro players ended with points on the board; 10 of those players had at least two points.
In Friday's loss to Brigham Young, Oakes had a hat trick of his own. Golden also had two goals. Andrew Carlson also made 42 saves on 50 shots.
"Troy and (forward) Kyle (Obuhanick) played really well in spite of their injuries," said head coach Curtis Duffus. "We're playing a lot better. Our system is working well."
Oakes has a shoulder injury that will require surgery at the end of the season and Obuhanick is currently suffering from ankle injury.
Oakes and Golden alone combined for 13 points in the first two games.
In the last game of the trip, Utah State was able to repeat its earlier rout of Metro. Down 7-1, Metro was able to grab three quick goals but the momentum was done in by penalties. 10 straight penalties resulted in nine more goals for Utah State, which put the game out of reach.
"We just need to work on getting to loose pucks but hopefully we can do well against some weaker teams, Kansas and New Mexico, next weekend," explained Duffus.
This weekend Metro will try to continue their high scoring against The University of New Mexico on Friday at 9:10 p.m. at The Edge in Littleton and The University of Kansas on Saturday at 6:25 p.m. at the Ice Ranch in Littleton.
