Metro's no. 15-ranked men's soccer team was upset by Colorado State University - Pueblo 3-2 Oct. 10 and tied cross-town rival Regis University 1-1 two days later.
CSU-Pueblo scored three goals before Metro could find the back of the net in the 87th minute. Metro defender Joey Duran found forward Ola Sandquist who headed it past the Pueblo keeper for his 8th goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Duran scored his first goal of the season, an unassisted shot, to put the game to 3-2. With only a few minutes remaining, Metro kept the pressure on but time ran out, giving the 'Runners their third loss of the season.
Metro defender Ryan Brooks had to sit the out the Pueblo game due to a red card against Fort Lewis the weekend prior. Brooks has class on Fridays and did not make the trip to Pueblo.
"It was very frustrating. We have a very good team with a lot of depth. CSU - Pueblo is usually a team we can handle. I feel solely responsible for not being able to help out my team with that victory," Brooks said.
Head coach Ken Parsons did not feel the team came out to compete as a whole. "It's a game of 11 players, and, unfortunately, none of our players showed up for the game on Friday," he said.
The 'Runners played two days later in a cold and wet match against conference rival Regis.
After sitting out Oct. 10 for yellow cards, Metro forward Kellen Johnson returned to the field to find defender Joey Duran in the 30th minute for Duran's second goal of the weekend. Duran slid to put the ball in the back of the net after the ball skipped through the penalty box. 'Runners goalkeeper Ryan Vickery made four saves to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
The Rangers came back to tie the game on a penalty kick by forward Nathan Kafer. Metro dominated the rest of the half, out shooting Regis 14-5, but were plagued once again by an inability to finish scoring chances. So Metro went into their fourth overtime game of the season locked at 1-1.
Despite controlling overtime with 10 shots to Regis' three, the 'Runners could not find the net. The game ended in a 1-1 tie to give Metro their third tie of the season.
"We had plenty of opportunities to finish off the game. We are all just trying to kill the ball, get the fancy goals. When all we need to do is make sure the ball goes in the back of the net," Brooks said.
Metro moves to 7-3-3 and 4-1-2 in the RMAC. The team needs to remain focused for the next few weeks of regular season play.
"We have to take one game at a time. We can't afford to drop another game from here on out," Brooks said.
Roadrunners head coach Ken Parsons thinks the team needs to come out and play every game the same way, no matter who their opponent is.
"We don't take anyone for granted. Obviously we played good games last week against Mesa State and Fort Lewis and then we play teams that aren't in the top 25 and we get a loss and a tie. I think sometimes we don't put the same level of concentration and focus into other opponents," Parsons said.
Metro is now 3rd in the RMAC behind Fort Lewis and Colorado School of Mines. They dropped to No.18 in the country and remain No.2 in the central region. They continue conference play this weekend playing Oct. 17 against Colorado School of Mines and Oct. 19 against Colorado Christian, both at Auraria Field.
