Single Moment, while an obvious exploration of talent and flow, is at the same time a failed effort to find cohesion in an incohesive medium. And, unfortunately, the first fifth of Single Moment is an exercise in futility. Once you work your way through "Norman's Gold" you begin to realize the fruitless masquerade is over. "While My Lady Sleeps" forces a fresh breeze through the steaming pot that's been stewing up to this point. Hess' smooth tone and effortless transitions here make you wonder if these songs even belong on the same album. In "Out of the Past," a very pleasant trumpet samba breaks out in the middle and gives hope for an interesting finish. Single Moment doesn't offer a whole lot of other surprises other than track eight, a masterful, but messy, blob of notes. Overall, Hess puts forth a decent effort, but unfortunately, the record lacks even flow.
