Sudden storm surprises suburbs
Joyce Brady and Jeremy Alber
Trees limbs and fog-covered debris lay silent in a neighborhood near 32nd Ave and Kipling Street after a chorus of storms ripped through the metro area July 20. Many west-side neighborhoods like this one, were left in shambles after the gusting winds and hail resulted in shattered windows and tree-littered slalom courses on nearly every street and avenue. Most roads were blanketed with rain-soaked leaves and piles of hailstones, many the diameters of quarters and dimes. Despite the extensive damage and an estimated 50,000 homes left in darkness, no serious injuries were reported.
