Introduction to TIR: The Colorado General Assembly recognized that many school districts faced a shortage of teachers and often struggle to find qualified persons to teach their students. As a result The General Assembly passed legislation that permits persons with experience in areas other than public school teaching to teach under the State regulations for Teachers in Residence. Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD) initiated a Teacher in Residence Program (TIR) in August, 2000 which serves candidates hired by participating school districts to teach in one of their schools. The TIR program takes two years to complete. In the first year the TIR candidate is both a full time teacher and a student. The TIR candidate attends classes at MSCD and learns how to be an effective teacher. In the second year, the TIR candidate works with the school district to complete the requirements for the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). At the end of the second year the candidate will receive an Initial License for teaching in Colorado, provided they have met the State regulations for the Initial License. What is the Teacher in Residence program? TiR
(Teacher in Residence) and CASEL
(Colorado Accelerated Special Education Licensure) Programs are dynamic,
rigorous, and growing programs that include professional course work,
seminars, observation and in class coaching designed specifically, The education of teachers to whom the public entrusts its children is one of the most serious policy issues of the day. Post baccalaureate teacher licensure routes provide opportunities for people from various educational backgrounds and walks of life to become teachers. They have opened doors to teaching for minority candidates, persons from other careers, the military, and liberal arts colleges.
