A Profile of Lake Middle School
![]() |
Lake Middle School in west Denver, one of the city’s oldest active schools, serves a predominantly Hispanic student population of 650 students, all but 4% of whom are eligible for the federal free/reduced-price lunch program.
The school is notable for the quality and cultural diversity of its staff, which includes individuals from Argentina, Bosnia, Brazil, Germany and the Philippines, and an exceptionally high percentage of teachers with a postsecondary degree in their subject area (84%, compared with the statewide average of 51%).
Lake provides a strong infrastructure of support for students. Its academic program includes humanities, math, science, technology, music, visual arts and English-language acquisition, and the staff is laying the groundwork for implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Grades Program.
After-school activities range from boys’ and girls’ sports, life-skills classes and technology training, to collaborative study groups through the AVID program. Lake also houses a full-service health clinic, operated in partnership with St. Anthony’s Hospital and Denver Health Medical Center.
The school’s campus, overlooking 177-acre Sloan’s Lake Park and landscaped with 175 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, is among the most beautiful in the city. The 39-classroom building was designed by noted Denver architects Merrill and Burnham Hoyt in the “eclectic” style, and features elaborate exterior brickwork, soaring Tudor towers, parapets and octagonal motifs. Inside are a vaulted marble foyer, arched passageways, two gymnasiums, an auditorium, and a wood-paneled library in the style of an English council hall from the Middle Ages.
Lake, opened in 1926, was one of 17 public schools built during Denver’s “City Beautiful” movement under the leadership of Mayor Robert Speer.
