A Profile of Martin Luther King
Early College Middle School
![]() |
MLK, which serves the socioeconomically diverse Montbello and Green Valley Ranch neighborhoods in northeast Denver, is undergoing transformation from a conventional middle school into an “early college high school” providing students with:
- A strong, college-prep curriculum with extensive academic support and counseling
- Tuition-free, for-credit postsecondary courses offered through the Community College of Aurora
- Structured internships organized around various “majors.”
Early college high schools are designed to enhance educational achievement and opportunity for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students can earn college credit and/or take college-level courses while they are earning a high school diploma.
The learning options under development at MLK will give students the chance to get a head start on postsecondary education, training and/or employment in the following fields.
- Real estate, construction and architecture
- Health careers
- Information technology, including supply-chain management and computer game design
- Hospitality management and tourism
- Wildlife biology/conservation.
Among the businesses and institutions offering internships to MLK students are Oakwood Homes, Johnson & Wales University, UPS, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, Fitzsimons, Colorado State University and the University of Denver.
MLK students also have the benefit of a comprehensive athletic program and nearly two dozen after-school activities, clubs and enrichment classes.
