A Profile of North High School
![]() |
For nearly a century, North High School has served the working-class neighborhoods of northwest Denver that have been home to successive waves of immigrants – from Italy, Poland, Germany, the Ukraine and, more recently, Mexico and other Latin American countries.
Today, nearly 90% of North High’s 1,079 students are Hispanic; one in four have limited proficiency in English, and 80% are eligible for the free/reduced-price lunch program.
JoAnn Trujillo Hays, North’s principal since fall 2006, is a veteran educator who has led the development of dual-language elementary school programs in Boulder, Denver and Lafayette. She and her staff are focused on increasing the number of North students who attend classes regularly, earn a diploma and leave school well prepared for postsecondary education, training and employment.
North has established a mentoring program and a summer enrichment academy for entering freshmen, and recently launched The Future Center, which provides counseling, informational materials and other resources to help students prepare for college.
The academic program at North includes English, math, science, social studies, world languages, music, art and business. The school offers Advanced Placement classes in several subjects, and its Computer Magnet program provides industry-standard training in Web applications, 3D animation, broadcast and broadband communication, and project management.
