Thomas Jefferson High School, located on the southeastern edge of the city, serves an ethnically/racially diverse population of just over 1,100 students from eight Denver neighborhoods. Among TJ’s outstanding features are:
- Computer Magnet, a nationally recognized information-technology “career academy” that offers industry-standard training in Web applications, solution designs and 3D animation, broadcast and broadband communication, and project management
- An award-winning journalism program that includes a student-run newspaper and a student-produced daily video-magazine show
- A veteran principal, a strong staff and an academic program that ranges from Advanced Placement classes (English, math, science, social studies and Spanish) to Cognitive Tutoring, an innovative approach to improving math achievement
- A wide variety of extracurricular learning opportunities and experiences, from a National Forensics League team to Junior ROTC to the DECA career-exploration program.
TJ, which opened in 1960, has a 90% attendance rate and its graduation rate (94.8%) is well above the district average of 81%. Just over 70% of the school’s teachers are tenured, and their average length of experience is 11 years, compared to 9.8 districtwide.
