Women's Studies

Women's Studies, as an academic discipline, emerged from the grassroots feminist movement of the 1970's. The program utilizes history, English, psychology, sociology, philosophy and a variety of other disciplines to study the diversity of women's lives, literatures, histories and experiences. Women's Studies stresses the importance of social constructs and contexts--such as gender, ethnicity, race, class and sexual identity--to the understanding of individual and collective experience. The Institute offers a major through the Individualized Degree Program and a regular minor. Several Women's Studies classes meet general education and/or multicultural requirements. Women's studies provides a broad-based liberal arts education with an emphasis on critical thinking which can be applied to a multitude of careers.
